There’s a special kind of optimism that lives in a tradie’s glovebox and it’s the belief that a faded Bunnings receipt, a half-working pen, and a “she’ll be right” attitude counts as a business plan. Spoiler: it doesn’t… but it does explain why the BAS feels like a surprise attack every quarter.
The Fairy Tale Begins: “Once upon a receipt…”
You know the scene.
It’s a Tuesday night. Dinner’s half-cooked, the kids are asking for help with homework, and someone’s just remembered the trailer registration is due. Then the tradie partner strolls in, grinning like he’s solved world hunger.
“Good news love — I’ve got it all sorted.”
Sorted.
And by “sorted”, he means:
- a Bunnings receipt with a total circled in blue pen,
- a scribble that says “quote?? $3,800??”
- and a mysterious note: “call Dave”.
That’s the business plan.
It’s also the moment the eye-roll is born.
Because deep down, we all know what happens next:
- materials jump in price,
- the job takes longer than expected,
- the customer changes their mind twice,
- and suddenly the profit has disappeared faster than a sausage sizzle at 10:05am.
The fairy tale ends with:
“How come we’re so busy but there’s no money?”
The Real Problem (it’s not the receipt… it’s the missing bits)
A receipt is evidence you spent money.
It is not evidence you made money.
Here’s what the “receipt plan” is missing:
1) The “What’s Included” reality
Receipts don’t show the hidden costs:
- travel time
- setup and pack-up
- tools and wear-and-tear
- time spent quoting, chasing, and fixing
- the “quick extra” that somehow took an hour
2) The “When does the money hit the bank?” problem
You can be profitable and still broke.
Because cashflow doesn’t care about your good intentions.
3) The “Stop doing dumb stuff” clause
Receipts don’t include boundaries like:
- deposits
- variations in writing
- payment terms that don’t rely on hope and friendliness
Other Fairy Tales Tradie Businesses Tell Themselves
Let’s be honest — the receipt is only one character in the storybook.
Fairy Tale #2: “If we just get more work, it’ll fix itself”
More work with no structure just gives you:
- more late nights,
- more mistakes,
- and a bigger mess to clean up.
Fairy Tale #3: “My prices are fine — everyone else is just expensive”
If you’re working hard but not building savings, paying yourself properly, or getting ahead… your prices might not be “fine”.
Fairy Tale #4: “I’ll sort the admin when it slows down”
It never slows down.
It only gets louder.
Practical (and Painless) Fix: Upgrade the Receipt into a Real Plan
No one’s asking for a 40-page document. This is the tradie-friendly version.
Step 1: The “Back of the Receipt” upgrade (takes 15 minutes)
Grab a fresh page (not the actual receipt) and write:
- What jobs make us the best money?
- What jobs cause the most headaches?
- What’s one thing we must improve this month?
- What number do we want in the bank each Friday?
- What are we saying “no” to this year?
That’s not fluff — that’s direction.
Step 2: The “Quote like a grown-up” checklist (simple but powerful)
Every quote needs:
- clear inclusions
- clear exclusions
- timeline expectations
- payment terms (deposit/progress/final)
- a variations rule: “changes must be approved before extra work continues”
This one change alone saves relationships and profit.
Step 3: The Friday Money Minute (20 minutes, not a panic attack)
Once a week (same time, same day):
- what’s in the bank?
- what invoices are due?
- what bills are coming?
- what’s one action to protect cash this week?
That’s it. No spreadsheets from hell. Just a rhythm.
Step 4: The “Two Lists” that stop chaos
Keep these two lists on the fridge (or the office wall):
- This Week’s Top 3 Priorities
- Stop Doing List (yes, it’s allowed)
Quick Laugh, Real Truth
If your “business plan” looks like:
- a receipt,
- a text from a customer saying “u still coming?”,
- and a half-finished quote…
You don’t need more motivation.
You need a system that doesn’t rely on memory and adrenaline.
(And possibly a glovebox clean-out. But let’s not get carried away.)
If this hit a little too close to home, you’re not alone — it’s more common than you’d think. Start with the “Back of the Receipt Upgrade” above and see how quickly the fog clears.
And if you’d like help turning the chaos into something calm and workable, stay tuned — there’s more coming in this series.
